In her playful painting practice, Joslyn Hobbis is interested in working beyond the confines of what is usually considered the standard rectangle: experimenting with gestural movements of the body vs layered repetitive mechanical painted marks, erasing, and pitting the layers against each other.
Cast-off materials create curious objects to explore via holes and protrusions, gateways and portals, but they also make commentary on consumerism, and postmodern ideals of breaking down barriers between low and high cultural values through play. This creates an invitation for the visitor to do more than stand back and ponder, but rather move around the artworks to peer and snoop.
An artwork is an encounter with splatter, smear, smudge, stroke, drip, crack and fissure, while the biomorphic shape breaks free of the traditional square frame.
It is a practice of pitting the whimsical against the serious to explore joy, play, imagination, and illusion in which we seek to make a connection with ourselves and our collectivity.
