The Sculpture Park at Waitakaruru Arboretum http://www.sculpturepark.co.nz are thrilled to announce that local Hamilton artist Marion Manson is to become the new Artist in Residence beginning 4 April.Sybille Schlumbom Arts Manager and Educator of the sculpture park believes Marions art will add depth and interest to the park experience, and visitors are in for a real treat.
Marion’s art practice uses only ecologically sustainable plant dye methods. She will be dyeing natural fibres, paper and threads, running workshops for children and adults and working on an installation for the small pavilion by the lower lakes.
Opportunities are abundant in the unique park landscape says Marion, a nationally recognised textile artist, with 20 years experience
“I will be experimenting with tree wrapping, eco printing, compost and mud dyeing using materials within the park”
“My natural dyeing journey began in 2008 when I was hooked after being totally amazed at the results from the first dye pot and rust bath. For the last 5 years my practice has involved dyeing silks and recycled cream wool blankets with natural plant materials, more recently experimenting with eco prints. The serendipitous nature of the results –each piece totally unique and original – never ceases to amaze me.”
“I am excited about this opportunity, especially starting at this time of year, with the autumn colour, observing the seasonal changes and beauty of the park.”
The unique Waikato Sculpture Park is a former quarry that has been transformed into a magnificent 17 hectare garden and arboretum. It has approx. 18,000 trees and shrubs, 270 labeled, a stream, towering cliffs, rocks, a stream, many ponds, and small waterfalls.
See Marion at work on Thursdays when she will be working in the park, or make an appointment by arrangement, and watch out for her marked experiments around the park.
