Currently 152,800 care and protection notifications are made to Child, Youth and Family, each year. 418 calls are made each day, and these services are overwhelmed.
The Government’s White Paper on Vulnerable Children suggests a new service will be set up called “Child Protect”. Here the public will be able to report concerns by phone, e-mail, online, or by text.
A key factor in decreasing New Zealand’s child abuse statistics lays in the area of communication. This includes better communication between the different agencies who deal with children. All too often children seem to fall between the gaps created by agencies who do not share information.
Communication is also essential at a grass roots community level. Community members need to speak up and make their concerns known to those that can help.
