On average 14 women are killed in NZ by a member of their family each year. These women’s names are briefly known to the general public before they become yet another number in the sad statistics of domestic violence in New Zealand.
The intent of this work is to not only remember those whose lives have been taken, but also to draw attention the vast number that is represented in the negative space that lays between each casket. In 2011 13,937 women & 11,014 children (total 24,951) needed the help of Women’s Refuge. Police are called to around 200 domestic violence situations a day, one every seven minutes on average.
Police estimate only 18% of domestic violence incidents are reported.
Although '14' reflects on present day figures, it also asks us to consider what the future holds. Certainly if domestic violence continues at this level with rapidly growing populations a Dystopia is not that far away.
