The Purpose of the Trust

Purpose

Registered as a Charitable Entity 7 January 2008; Registration Number CC20383

The Waikato Sculpture Trust has enabled a diverse audience to enjoy sculpture in a natural setting, raised the profile of contemporary sculpture and provided artists with an opportunity to use the variety of landscapes within a dedicated sculpture park to display their work.

The Trust was formed in May 2007, to encourage and support emerging and established artists to display their sculpture in an environment unique within New Zealand. It did this by:

  • organising a succession of curated sculpture exhibitions
  • encouraging artists to use an outstanding venue that is accessed by a broad range of visitors
  • promoting sculpture within the education sector

The Trust worked closely with the Sculpture Park @ Waitakaruru Arboretum to provide a venue that is uniquely suitable for sculpture exhibitions. The Park has been the site for more than 20 sculpture exhibitions since it opened to the public in November 2004.

The Board went into recess in July 2013 as it was unable to raise sufficient funds to cover the costs of running exhibitions.  Members of the Trust Board include:

  • Kate Wilson (Chairperson)
  • Maxine Moana - Tuwhangai
  • John Wakeling
  • Dr. Clive Gilson
  • Dr. Dorothy Gilson
